Sophia Travis resides in Bloomington, Indiana where she's content to make music in her hometown... she has played in the band Lola, the Vulgar Boatmen, and she's been a backing musician for John Dehner and the Enthusiasts, Sam Lowry, and the Mary Janes.
A background in classical piano has led to the keys of the harpsichord, fortepiano, toy piano, accordion, and many vintage keyboards that include Farfisa organ, RMI and Univox electric harpsichords...
When not playing alternative music, she's seriously involved in playing Nuevo Tango and traditional tango music. Composer
Gerardo Dirie introduced Sophia to these genres of beautiful music. During a long tenure as a guest performer with the Indiana University School of Music
Latin American Popular Music Ensemble, Sophia built an extensive repertoire from performing the works of Astor Piazzolla with a number of tango quintets.
Sophia is also a member of a local organization called The Friday Musicale! The organization recently celebrated its centennial anniversary year... through The Friday Musicale, Sophia actively taught piano lessons for 14 years and continues to support local music education through the club’s activities.
Recent shows have included playing for a sold-out performance at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in a small orchestra for Piazzolla's operita, Maria de Buenos Aires, playing a small set at Hospital, performing in a quintet with
Pablo Ziegler at the IU School of Music, and a tiny show at Bear’s Place...
It’s hard predicting where you may chance upon a performance... online you can find signs of her unconventional musical travels in several destinations like the
Wylie House Museum or with
Hoosier Squeeze.
If you're really curious for an example of her penchant for old-fashioned music, you can listen to turn-of-the-century music that pianist
Hakan Ali Toker and Sophia recorded at Echo Park Studios in a collaborative project for a
"Japan-in-America" exhibition at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures on the campus of Indiana University. The sheet music
collection, from which the period songs were chosen, belongs to Professor Greg Waller.
Sophia counts the time spent at Queensize in Indianapolis, with the members of The Pieces, as some of her most cherished days... and she sees
Mitten as dearest to her heart among all the musical creations she’s been a part of.
When not playing music, Sophia is involved in local politics. She writes about that on
pin-the-tail nearly every day.
